[edit] Welcome to GentooVM.com (Gentoo Linux Virtual Machine)!

GentooVM provides VMWare images of Gentoo Linux. Using a freely available VMWare player, you may load these images and test the Gentoo Linux operating system without actually installing Gentoo Linux.

[edit] Why Wiki?

Seeing as Linux and related projects are predominantly community driven, I figured Wiki would provide an effective means to share my work and experiences with Gentoo Linux (specifically within VMWare player for this site) as well as allowing others to freely contribute. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please post to the discussion page.

[edit] June 17th, 2008

I've been meaning to (for a while now) work on a new release of the GentooVM but various delays continued to come up (work, school, etc). Enough time went by that I decided to wait until the next Gentoo release came out (2008.0); but that ended up being a longer wait than I had anticipated. I just wanted to post an update on the status of things (if anyone is even following it) and simply state that I do still plan to put some time into GentooVM once Gentoo 2008.0 comes out of beta. At which time I plan on making the next GentooVM release also include all the improvements that Stonie had worked on in his version of the GentooVM.

[edit] Releases

This is a relatively bare bones install of Gentoo Linux. Xorg and a window manager are not included.

[edit] Latest Release

This is merely a release candidate and has not been tested thoroughly; mileage may vary. Please report any problems to the discussion page.

[edit] Getting Started

All you need to do to get started is download the virtual machine files provided here, and download vmware server and vmware server console! The VMWare server and console programs are completely free from vmware.com and will allow you to run your virtual machine. VMWare server allows you to take snapshots, so if you're experimenting take snapshots as you advance so you can revert to something else if you screw up.

If you are using windows, you only need to download the vmware server program from vmware.com. If you are on linux or another OS, it is possible to seperate the two and run the virtual machine on a different host than the computer you are on.

Once you have the vmware server program installed and the compressed virtual machine from this site downloaded, all you need to do is extract the downloaded file! After this open up vmware-server and import the virtual machine (Click file, click import, navigate to your virtual machine's .vmx file, and click ok!)

As soon as the machine has been imported, all you need to do is click play!! Rock and ROLL!

[edit] Logging In

GentooVM started
GentooVM started

When the virtual machine finishes starting you will be prompted for a login:

  • Login: root
  • Password: gentoo

[edit] Connecting To The Virtual Machine

For security reasons, SSH is not configured to start on boot up, as it is recommended that the root password be changed first:

# passwd

At which point SSH can be started:

# /etc/init.d/sshd start

And SSH can be configured to start every time that the virtual machine is run:

# rc-update add sshd default

[edit] Installing Packages

Prior to installing any packages, it is recommended that the Gentoo mirrors list be populated (this only has to be done once):

# mirrorselect --output --servers 10 >> /etc/make.conf

And portage synchronized:

# emerge --sync

    • For those who want to experiment with the Gentoo installation themselves, this is the VMWare Appliance I used for an empty slate (10GB Virtual Drive). The VMWare Appliance is ready to boot off of the CD in the CD-ROM (this requires VMWare to be setup appropriately, but this is the default setting) simply because I had a Gentoo InstallCD handy.
